awsl: The Danmaku That Means 'I'm Dead' awsl
- Literal meaning
- pinyin initials: 啊我死了 — 'ah, I'm dead'
- Where you'll see it
- Overwhelmingly cute, beautiful or impressive moments — originally spread by VTuber fans
awsl is pure emotion compressed to four letters: 啊我死了 — "ah, I'm dead." You post it when something is so cute, so beautiful or so impressive that you have briefly ceased to function. It became so ubiquitous that Bilibili named it the official danmaku of the year for 2019.
Where it came from
The phrase spread through the VTuber fandom — viewers dying of cuteness in live chat — before escaping into the whole platform. Today it works everywhere: a perfect cosplay, a kitten, an impossible basketball shot, a plot twist that kills you. It's the danmaku equivalent of pressing a heart button, except it flies across the screen at the exact moment.
How it's used
- Alone:
awsl— the standard dosage. - Stacked:
awslawslawsl— when one "death" isn't enough. - Expanded: the full 啊我死了, for emphasis or for newcomers.
You'll also see cousins with the same energy: 我死了 ("I died"), 可以舔屏了 ("screen-licking time"). Related vocabulary: yyds for sustained praise, 666 for skill, and the unwritten rules of when each fits.
