Bilibili's universal term for content creators on the platform

Every video platform has a word for the people who make things. On Bilibili, creators are called UP主 (pronounced “UP-joo”), short for “upload master.” Say it around Bilibili users and you’ve signaled you know the culture.

What exactly does it cover?

UP主 refers to anyone who uploads original content to Bilibili:

  • Solo vloggers and gamers
  • Musicians, animators and remix artists
  • Teachers, professors and science communicators
  • Small production studios like 影视飓风
  • Even institutions — museums run official spaces too

It is not equivalent to “influencer.” An influencer metric is about reach and sponsorship; UP主 is simply the creator identity. A physics teacher with two million followers explaining exam problems is an UP主. So is someone uploading their first guitar cover.

Why the term matters culturally

The word carries connotations the English “content creator” doesn’t quite capture:

  • Craft identity. UP主 are expected to make things themselves. Re-uploading other people’s work without credit violates core community norms.
  • Community closeness. Fans follow people, not just channels. Long-time followers name their fan communities and celebrate creator anniversaries.
  • Meritocratic flavor. The platform’s mythology includes small creators growing through quality work — the annual Top 100 awards celebrate everything from solo teachers to studio teams.

How to use it in English

First mention: “creator (UP主)”. After that, just “creator” works fine. Avoid translating it as “YouTuber” — that imports the wrong platform’s identity — and avoid “up master” literally; nobody says that, including in China.

Where you’ll see it in the wild: fans commenting “UP主更新啦!” (“the UP updated!”), or the annual 百大UP主 (“Top 100 UP”) award list — which is where all one hundred profiles in our directory come from.

See it in context

老番茄, one of Bilibili’s most-followed gaming creators, is a textbook example of the UP主 archetype: twelve years of consistent uploads, a named fan community, and eight consecutive years on the Top 100 list.
