国风 (Guofeng): Traditional Chinese Style on a Modern Stage 国风
- Literal meaning
- guó fēng — 'national style' / 'Han style'
- Where you'll see it
- A music and visual aesthetic: traditional instruments, costumes and stories arranged with modern production
国风 (guó fēng, "gwo-fung") is the umbrella word for contemporary work built deliberately on traditional Chinese aesthetics. In music it means the suona, guzheng, pipa and dizi playing pop, electronic and orchestral arrangements; in video it means hanfu costume, ink-painting gradients and stories drawn from classical literature. It is one of the most distinctive sounds on Bilibili's Music & Remix zone — and one of the easiest to enjoy without understanding a single lyric.
What guofeng sounds like
Three common shapes:
- Traditional instruments, modern genres. A suona tearing through electronic dance music; a guzheng arrangement of a chart hit; folk melodies scored for full orchestra.
- Pop songs built on classical imagery. Lyrics about Tang-dynasty poems, landscapes and legends, set to arrangements that quote traditional melodies.
- Crossover performance. Traditional musicians covering game and anime soundtracks — a format that constantly goes viral because it collapses two worlds at once.
Where you'll meet it
- 兰音Reine — a "2.5-dimensional" musician writing ethereal folk and guofeng originals.
- 浑元Rysn — the suona across everything: symphonies, electronic beats, marches and convention favorites.
- HOPICO — calm, narrative videos that unpack classic songs, guofeng and beyond.
- Festival and award videos — guofeng performances are a staple of Bilibili's big community events.
Don't confuse it with 国创
The words are neighbors: 国创 (Guochuang) is Bilibili's zone for original Chinese animation, while 国风 is the broader aesthetic across music, fashion and video. A guochuang series will usually have a guofeng soundtrack — but they're different words for different things.
Why it travels so well
Music is music. Guofeng videos pair striking visuals with arrangements that don't require Chinese to land, which makes the genre one of the friendliest entry points for international viewers — right after Visual-first channels and guichu remixes.
