番剧 (Bangumi): The Anime Zone, Explained 番剧

番剧 (pronounced “bahn-joo”) originally just meant “TV program” — borrowed from Japanese 番組. In Chinese internet usage it narrowed to mean one specific thing: serialized animation, especially Japanese anime seasons.

Bangumi names two related things:

1. A content category — episodic animation as a genre
2. The official streaming zone — Bilibili licenses hundreds of anime series (including simulcasts of current Japanese seasons) and streams them legally in a dedicated section with proper subtitles
